Busy busy
It's been a busy time! Here are some short story illustrations I finished recently for futura.poskod.my. More to come soon!
I also have a 30"x40" oil painting commission (first painting to be hung ever, phew!) drying in my living room. Feels like a graduation thesis from the year learning about oil painting.

Bioshock 2 Bas Relief Design
Something from the archives (2008). Here's one of the bas relief designs I did for Bioshock 2. In-game it appears with the phrase "Fallen, fallen is Babylon" across it, with a shrine of photographs at its base (which someone else did a great job on).

Mark Making Study
Simple study of interpreting a subject into marks. It's like a big puzzle, painting is. Ref from characterdesigns.com.

Some Whiskey Bottles
Here's another, in warm light instead. Getting the hang of mixing oil colors, going to work on drawing and expression next.

The fun and learning continues. I quite enjoyed tackling the cool overcast light from the window. 4hrs, oils on a 6"x8" canvas panel:

New Pencil
I just bought a woodless pencil (Cretacolor Monolith 2B). I love it! *throws away clutch pencil that likes to break while sharpening*

Broken Graphite
My pencil nib likes to break under sharpening, leaving a flat jagged broken stump. So I decided I won't sharpen it any more and just draw with the stump. Take that, pencil!

Painting Pitfalls: Getting too Literal
It's hard not to get carried away rendering many many many details seperately instead of working the whole painting. The danger is overcomplicating values and edges trying to describe objects too literally. The balance is thrown out of whack, and any appeal the had painting gets lost. Really, an impression can give a more tangible feeling for an interoir.
Here's a quick hack Photoshop filter job to illustrate. The high contrast B&W has less detail, but so much more depth and feeling. The "too literal" original is below it.

Good Balance
Good balance between fine lines and broad strokes are so important. It's too easy getting carried away adding more fine lines to try and describe something clearer. Better to erase lines to do so! (note to self: more fine lines highlight the drawing, good balance highlights the subject)
